“We don’t have long to live …” were my husband’s words to me after witnessing our pastor breakdown on this past Mother’s Day. The church choir was singing a song before the pastor’s sermon, and he became very emotional. He began crying. After a few moments, he sat down and his assistants began fanning and comforting him. The pastor’s wife walked to the pulpit, kneeled down in front of the pastor, and bowed her head. After several minutes, the pastor stood up and announced that his pancreatic cancer has returned and it is spreading throughout his lymph nodes. The congregation was aware that he had battled pancreatic cancer in the recent past. The surprise was that he also announced that arthritis had spread throughout his body. He said that every joint, muscle and tendon in his body was aching. He confessed that when he preaches two sermons on Sundays, all he can do afterwards is go home, get in the bed and sleep until Monday morning. Our pastor is only 59 years old! We felt emotionally stunned and drained the rest of the day. The next morning, we had a discussion about our goals during retirement. My husband wants to travel more. He said we need to enjoy our retirement because we don’t have long to live. We resolved to travel more and worry less.
